Space awareness course highlights the growing importance of the Space domain

Space is now a key Domain for military operations

Twenty personnel representing a range of UK military units, together with representatives other JEF participant nations, attended a Space Awareness Course at Northwood Headquarters from 7–9 July.

Sponsored by the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) and delivered by UK Space Command, the course was designed to improve understanding of the role that Space capabilities play in modern military operations.

As armed forces and societies become increasingly reliant on Space-based services, understanding the opportunities and challenges of the Space domain is becoming ever more important. The course provided attendees with an introduction to Space Domain Awareness, examining how satellites and other Space-enabled systems support communications, navigation, intelligence gathering, weather forecasting and situational awareness.

It also explored the challenges of operating in Space, including congestion, competition and threats to critical Space infrastructure.

Participants considered both the opportunities and risks that Space presents for military operations and civil resilience. Discussions focused on how Space capabilities can enhance operational effectiveness, support decision-making and strengthen resilience across government, defence and wider society.

The programme also examined emerging technologies and the growing importance of integrating Space considerations into planning processes. The course ended with a practical exercise to apply what the attendees had learned to a real-world exercise scenario.

By bringing together personnel from across the JEF community, the training fostered greater understanding of Space as a critical operational domain and helped build a shared appreciation of how Space-enabled capabilities can support multi-national operations in an increasingly complex multi-Domain security environment.
